Sighh Designs

Polly Vadasz. Her designs, and the products created from such, are everywhere right now. A quick search of her shop, Sighh Designs, on Twitter or Instagram will give you the same eyes as that love heart eyed emoji. <3

As you will know if you're up to date, she has recently brought out a premium case design which is a major upgrade from the original slimline cases she stocks (which are still totally awesome). Sooooo, I thought I'd give a run down of the differences between the two from a customers perspective, a customer who shops on a budget but still like to treat herself too!

So first, heads up, the premium cases are £4 more expensive at £18 but I think the extra is well worth it! (and just think, it's less than a fast food lunch, blessing in disguise??) Also, most good quality high street phone cases such as Skinny Dip, retail at at least £20 so just think that you're getting a hand drawn, made with love, case for less money!

The Premium cases have a glossy finished compared to the sprayed on alternative and by jove does it make the colours pop and look fabulous darling. The glossy finish is also so nice to hold in your hand cause it's so smoothy smooth and good quality. The glossy finish also means the case is super easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth so it shouldn't stain or become faded over time.

The case is also a little more bulky which I like as because I have an iPhone 6 which I protect with my life and soul, I want it to look fabulous but also stay protected. The thickness also means that there is no way that the case is gonna fall off or crack easily so you know your phone is safe.

So I think from that it's clear that I'm a big fan of the new cases, her designs, and overall persona, so if you haven't already checked her out then please do. Her shop link is here, blog link here, twitter here, and instagram here.

Sunday Musings: Flat Decor

With my move in being only 23 days away (not that I'm counting) (or that I have a countdown app on my phone), I can't help my mind but wander to all this decor, home ware, and ways to transform my student studio flat into a lovely space for me to feel at home in for the next year. I already adore pinterest but I am constantly scrolling through beautiful pictures, articles, and inspiration for all things homey.

One thing I really need to be organised and tidy is my desk so I have an entire pinterest board titled 'Bonjour Desk Inspiration' (can you tell I have a theme with my usernames, blog name, everything really...).

found on burkatron.com
How beautiful is this setup?! I adore the DIY mesh notice board, it's something super simple to make and is super effective, not only in being very useful, but also by looking so chic. I'm an avid lover of Caroline's blog, especially her DIY's which are always so cool!

I LOVE this desk lamp! I'm really into my greys so it would really tie in with the theme I've got going on. I also like the print in the frame, I have a black frame which is filled with 4xA5 limited edition prints by the one and only Polly Vadasz  (see her shop http://www.sighh.co) and I can't wait for it to take pride of place on my desk.

This photo is courtesy of @hayerlily on instagram and is used to illustrate my new bedding (shown in the photo) which has been sat untouched for months just waiting to go on my new bed! I'm also a massive fan of throws and lots of cushions cause it just makes a room feel so much more cosy! I think my boyfriend disagrees when we have to move approx. 769 cushions to get into bed though hehe!

Finally is plants and flowers! A way to inject a bit of colour and life into a room and don't they just look so cute! There's a trip to Ikea on the cards and hopefully they'll have some succulents there, as well as some other cute items!

If anyone knows of anywhere to buy nice but cheap matching kettle/toaster sets then please let me know cause I'm in the market for one! I can't wait to move in, a flat tour is definitely on the cards :)

Recent Reads

Dark Places - Gillian Flynn
My rating: 4/5 stars.
From the author from the hit novel and now adapted film 'Gone Girl' here's another offering from Gillian Flynn who is an incredible writer. The story focuses on Libby Day, who was just 7 years old when her brother was put behind bars for the murder of her sisters and mother, now alone and surviving from donations she is reached out to by a group who are convinced of her brother's innocence. She then begins to question what she saw that night and whether she thinks her brother is capable of such a horrific thing, and begins to uncover that everyone kept secrets that day, including her brother.

This book keeps you hooked from the beginning to the end as you begin to uncover more and more about what happened that day along with Libby and you'll find it really hard to put down.  (that tends to be a theme throughout all these reviews!) By the end you'll be left open mouthed and wanting to pick up another Gillian Flynn novel (I have my eye of Sharp Objects next...).

Before I Go To Sleep - SJ Watson
My Rating: 5/5 stars.
Christine wakes up every day with no memories of who she is, who she loves, her friends, her career, anything. After a brain injury her memory is erased every night and every morning she wakes up next to a man who she doesn't recognise, and one who may only be telling her half the story. Discover more of Christine's life along with the writing of her journal and uncover the answers to all the questions she comes up with every day.

This book twists and turns with the discovery of more and more about Christine's past, present and future and by the end your jaw will firmly be on the floor with the revelations she uncovers. For a book I found in my 'Customers who bought this also bought...' on amazon I'm very impressed and want to read it again to see this I didn't the first time round.

The Lie - CL Taylor
My Rating: 3.5/5 stars.
Jane Hughes has a loving partner and works at an animal sanctuary in the middle of rural Wales, she's the happiest she's been in years but her life is a lie. Jane Hughes doesn't exist. Five years prior, her best friends and her planned a once in a lifetime trip to Napal which rapidly turned into a nightmare which took the lives of two women. Jane tries to put the past behind her but someone knows she isn't who she says she is...

I enjoyed uncovering what really happened while they went away but found it hard to keep up with the many characters they meet on their travels as everyone is relevant to the story. The conclusion is good and the build up perfectly suits the ending but I wasn't as impressed with this book as the others.

The Girl On The Train - Paula Hawkins
My Rating: 5/5 stars.
Rachel gets the same commuter trains both morning and evening, she knows the route like the back of her hand, even to the moment when the train stops at the same red signal every day. She's started to feel like she knows the people in the houses on the route, Jason and Jess, she calls them, and their life is perfect. Everything is the same until one day she sees something she shouldn't and she feels like she has to find a way into their lives, to tell them.

This is one of the most talked about books at the moment so I couldn't not get my hands on it and read it! I read this in 3 sitting as I couldn't put it down until I was dragged away from the story to do stuff! The story is much more than what it seems at first and the story gains more and more depth as you read on. You uncover the mysteries of everyone in those two houses along with Rachel and by the end you'll be reading as quickly as you can to find out who gets what they deserve!

My First Experience of Yoga

I'm writing this post primarily so I can look back on it if (read: when) I lose my way a little so I can reflect on how this made me feel and I can go back to feeling good and at peace again.

I woke up today with the intention of going on a bike ride but work up too late to know that I would be back in time to shower, get ready and drive to work. So I spent around 10 minutes talking myself into doing something to give me some 'get up and go' but nothing too exhaustive cause I was feeling super tired haha. I've been subscribed to 'Yoga with Adriene' for about a month now and have yet to do any of her routines, and now I'm wondering why??

I thought I'd start with something tailored for the morning so chose her "Morning Yoga - Yoga to Start Your Day' routine which is a measly 27 minutes long, clearly there's no excuse not to do something in the morning. I actually went through the routine and by the end was thinking "is that it?! has it really been half an hour?!" when in the past I usually am counting down the minutes until the workout is over!

It really stretched out my body, got all my muscles awake for the day, gave me a bit of a sweat, engaged my core, my mind, and spirit, and encouraged me to set myself a goal for the day. It wasn't too strenuous for mornings but also gave me the wake up and shake up I needed to get ready and face the day ahead (which I know is going to be a long and tiring one). Now I feel ready to tackle on my day with my 'goal' set during yoga still firmly at the forefront of my mind, and I really feel like this will keep me going throughout the day.

Next I'm intrigued to try her 'Yoga For Complete Beginners' video cause that is most definitely me and I'm interested to find out more about yoga, and also I wish to see if there is a routine for anxiety and for bedtimes, I think these would be beneficial to have in my 'bank' of routines to whip out at the appropriate time.

Note to self: Keep referring back to this post and remember how good this first day of yoga was! Remember how flexible you used to be when you danced and aspire to gain some flexibility back - that will come with time and practice! Stay calm.

What's In My Bag?

Since finishing my second year of university I no longer have not carry around tonnes of folders and stuff so thought now would be the perfect time to do a What's In My Bag? post. I am a huge fan of ASOS handbags as they are reasonably priced, good quality, and last a pretty long time. This tote bag is the perfect size to carry a folder (if need be) and all the other crap necessities that I carry on an everyday basis.

Daisy Print Notebook (Etsy) I am forever taking notes, coming up with blog ideas, or writing lists for all manner of things so a notebook is essential along with pens. (I found 6 while emptying my bag..)

Current Book (Before I Go To Sleep by S J Watson) I always carry a book for when I'm waiting around and if you're into psychological thrillers then I highly recommend this one. I haven't finished it yet but I was hooked since the first page! Next up on my list is definitely The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkins.

Diary (Paperchase) I can't live without my diary! Although this one from Paperchase isn't on sale anymore, they still have loads available and even mid-year ones for those at school/college/uni.

Purse (Monki @ ASOS) I love this purse as it's big enough to hold all my cards and lots of change but not too big that it becomes a place to hoard receipts!

Headphones (SkullCandy) A necessity for travelling, waiting around. Now I have 10GB of 4G I'm forever watching YouTube videos on public transport to pass the time!

iPhone Charger Pretty self explanatory! I also use an external charger (when I remember to charge it... and put it in my bag...)

Keys My car keys, house keys, memory stick with my uni work on, and several key rings!

Makeup Touchups Stay Matte Powder, Match Perfection Concealor, usually a lipstick (or two) and an Ebay Makeup brush which I don't mind bumbling around in my bag all day!

Moringa Body Spray (The Body Shop) This is my second repurchase of this fragrance cause I love it! It's so fresh and is good for on-the-go freshen ups.

Hand Maid/Gel (Soap and Glory) I always carry antibac hand gel cause the world is a gross place, the Soap and Glory one is my fave simply because of the scent!

TIC TACS Cause who doesn't like minty fresh breath without having to find a place to throw away chewing gum?

Camera (Not pictured but is the Samsung NX3000) New camera! I love the DSLR quality, flipout screen, light weight and compact form for on the go snaps as well as my blog photos.

x

P.S If anyone wants to buy my old Canon 1100d camera with all the original packaging, strap, lens, etc, including a UV protection lens and a remote control then please let me know! I'm open to offers on price, but since it's in perfect condition I'm looking for at least £140 which is less than half price!

Wishlist | My 20th Birthday

It's almost a month until I turn the big 2-0 so I've been trying to recount all the things I've been saying "ooooooh" and "aaaahh" over for months. These guys made the cut so this is my little reminder of what I could spend any money on or ask for if I'm lucky enough! Plus I just like lusting after all these things again and I also enjoy wishlist posts and hope you do too!

First up if the thing which I have been lusting after ever since I set eyes on them. The Zoeva Rose Gold Collection. Oh. My. How stunning are these?! I loooove Zoeva brushes so I know they are insane quality, pretty cheap for the price (all of these are only around £50!) and they are rose gold which is simply beautiful. What's not to love?

Topshop Joni Jeans are one of the styles of Topshop jeans I am yet to own but I recently found love in a pair of H&M high waisted jeans and now would like to try Topshop's more expensive offering. Ripped knees are bang on trend so I want a part of the action cause I think they would bring a bit of casual to any outfit.

I've been wanting to hit the gym for a long while and since I've been drowning my sorrows in a serious amount of McDonalds nuggs I really need to but don't have a pair of trainers with sufficient support for my poor ex-dancers ankles (curse you pointe shoes!). Plus these Nike Roshe's are gorgeous and I love the pop of atomic red.

As always my wishlist of MAC lipsticks and eyeshadows is as long as my arm so I'd hope to contribute a little more to my collections. I think Amorous and Creme in your Coffee lipsticks and Patina and Espresso eyeshadows are high up there.

I'm after a new bag cause I'm definitely a 'new academic year, new handbag' kinda gal (don't know if that's a thing but I'll certainly make it one). I love the look of this Topshop Tote bag with Arrow Detailing cause it's big enough to fit in all my stuff and is a little less structured than my satchel style that I usually go for. I love the shape of this and fancy a bag that can go on my shoulder rather than with a huge long strap leaving my bag bashing against my thighs all day.

Finally some Muji storage for my ever-growing makeup collection. I did infact buy some draws from eBay quite a while ago but they are in no way big enough to fit my makeup anymore so I think it's about time I invested in some larger which will look beauts on my dresser.

Apologies for the volume of stock photos on this post, obviously it's hard not to when it's wishlist but I did include my own photos of the lisptick and eyeshadow (for reference they are 'patisserie' lipstick and 'sable' eyeshadow). Hopefully I am a lucky egg this year but I stress that I'm grateful for any gifts I receive and buy all my makeup and clothes with my own money. Do I even need to say this? I don't know, got to cover all bases on the internet, right?!

Any ideas of how I can celebrate my 20th? Let me know!

The Sparkliest Christmas Present

I've just uploaded these photos and now I can't stop staring. Wowzas.

Anyway, Merry (belated) Christmas everyone! And if you don't celebrate christmas, then happy time off school or anything else you may celebrate! Hope you've all had a wonderful time off so far. I just thought I'd share my favourite present from this christmas which is a gorgeous Swarovski ring from my incredible boyfriend, Danny. (hello you, cause I know you'l be reading this) It wasn't quite the surprise he had hoped for since I have weirdly sized fingers and we had to go for a try on, but I still lost my breath a little when I opened the box on christmas day. I had a lovely time celebrating with all my family and Danny and it's simply lovely being home from uni even if I am still working.

What did you guys get for christmas?! I'd love to know, particularly if it's makeup related as I've got christmas money to spend and the Bullring, Birmingham to go to! Wishing you all love and happiness at this time of year. xx

A Hearty Hello To You (Remember me?!)

Well good afternoon (or morning, wherever you may be) and a hearty hello to you. If you're still following me on bloglovin' or another network then thank you for bearing with me. Yes, another one of those 'hello, I've not blogged in X months, soz' posts. Any one who says second year of uni is easy is a big liar liar pants on fire and really needs to shush (and put out the fire in their pants).

All photo's are from my instagram which you can find HERE.

-Top Row-

Random surprise of a dozen red roses and dinner | This one makes the stress of life a lot more bearable | Thai Green Curry! Getting back into cooking and loving every delicious second of it

-Middle Row-

I finally invested in an Oh-So-Grown-Up Black coat - feeling v.sophisticated | Halloween ft. liquid latex cuts and chiseled collar bones | A quick weekend away to a very chilly Wales coastline

-Bottom Row-

Treats in the form of chicken and cocktails, what more could you want | Made a kitty friend who I tried to pay in chicken to do my assignments, instead she just napped and distracted me | I spend a good majority of my week in this position, and I couldn't be more content

Of course this seems like all I've done is eat good food, go on holiday and do fancy makeup but in reality, these are just the highlights and 98% of my time has been spent behind this laptop and with my head in journal articles. Who said uni wasn't fun? I've have missed blogging incredibly and I have so many ideas whizzing around my brain only to be written in my notebook and never to flourish into something I hope to be wonderful. I've realised that I need to factor in a little 'me' time and hopefully that will materialise into more blog posts.

That's all for now, but keep your eyes peeled!

Gratitude

Source
The past few weeks have been extremely stressful to say the least. I've spent them tying up loose ends at home, moving into a brand new house and spending 4 days completely alone to figure things out. The time alone consisted of a broken shower, a late night call to my boyfriend to come keep me company the first night because I want utterly terrified and spending my days extremely anxious and on edge due to the sheer amount of things I'm meant to be juggling this academic year.

Finally I'm feeling better after refusing to live in 'ignorant bliss' and sorting everything out. This year finally seems 'possible' and it's going to be bloody tough but I know I can do it even though it's going to be completely different to last year.

I thought I'd take some time to reflect on what I'm grateful for. I made a list when I was feeling down, just to keep myself grounded and realise that in the grand scheme of things, I'm doing alright.

1. Family. My wonderful, caring, selfless family. They're always there for me and supporting me in whatever way they can. I'm not going to be able to go home to see them as often this year but I know they're only a phone call or skype call away so that's reassuring.

2. My boyfriend, He's also incredibly supportive of my studies and getting a job too. I love how he never fails to make me laugh no matter how crap I feel, how he thinks I look cute when I've just woken up and is always being his silly self.

3. My friends. Both at home and at uni I've got a great support network of friends who are all up for a laugh and there to pick each other up when we're down. They make life at uni ten times more amazing and I can't wait for more memories with them this year!

4. My degree. I'm incredibly lucky to be studying a course that I love and at my dream university. I'm so grateful that I get the chance to achieve my career goal.

5. Accommodation. We've got a good house at a good price and yeah, it's not incredibly and has its flaws but I have a roof over my head, clothes on my back and food on my table which is so much more than a lot of others.

Those are the big things but I'm grateful for so many little things too like: the first cup of tea in the morning, my phone, cosy nights in watching the tv, fairy lights, and my comfy chelsea boots which I can't wait to make another appearance this autumn/winter.

Writing that list has honestly made me feel so grounded and to realise that life for me is actually pretty good. It's rewarding to remember the greater things and obviously I encourage anyone to do that same!

Tips For Shopping On A Student Budget

After living on my own at university for a year now, I'd say I've learnt quite a lot on shopping on a budget and cooking for one person, it's a lot harder than you expect! You'll get portions wrong, have gone off bananas and nothing to do with them and spend far too much money than is needed in the first few weeks but hopefully I can give you a few tips to help you out. P.S This is the first post written from my new house (shared with 4 of my uni friends), hoping to get a blog post up on how I've decorated my room after I have perfected where I want all the furniture to go, so keep your eyes peeled!

Frozen/Fresh:-
  • Chicken - buy frozen as it's cheaper and the quality is just the same, just remember to defrost the day you want to use it!
  • Mince - bought fresh, split into portions and then frozen for individual portions or cooked into batch to make chilli or spag bol, makes for a quick meal on days where you have late lectures!
  • Veg - easily bought frozen which is cheaper and means you can just use it when you need with no risk of it going off before you get chance.
  • Berries - Again, buy frozen and use for breakfast with yoghurt and granola or made into a delicious smoothie.
  • Natural Yoghurt - Great for breakfast or to cool down a spicy curry.
  • Milk
  • Frozen Onion - great to add to soups, chilli, homemade sauces and can be kept in tthe freezer for months and used when needed.
  • New Potatoes - can be boiled, roasted, fried or used cold in salads.
  • Eggs - A good addition to lunches and salads.
  • Fruit - Buy individually if you can to stop it going off before you eat it.
  • Stir-Fry vegetable mix - Lasts easily for two meals and is cheap!
  • Garlic - An essential for making your own sauces, etc.
  • Butter
  • Bread
Dried:-
  • Tinned Tomatoes - Use in curries, pasta sauces, chilli, spag bol, etc.
  • Cereal - Granola is great because it's filling and can be eaten in a variety of ways!
  • Herbs and Spices - You don't need all the herbs and spices available, it would cost a fortune, but a good start would be salt and pepper, chilli and stock cubes.
  • Tinned Fish - Good for sandwhiches, salads or as a filling on jacket potatoes.
  • Rice/Pasta - Buy these in bulk before coming to uni because they'll last all year!
  • Cous Cous - Great flavoured as a side dish instead of potatoes or in salads.
  • Dried Fruit/Nuts - Raisins and Almonds are my favourite, they're great as additions for breakfast or as simple snacks.
  • Tea/Coffee/Sugar
  • Rice Crackers/Cream Crackers - Great topped as part of lunches or as a snack.
  • Preserves - Jam/Peanut Butter/etc, good for breakfasts or as a snack on top of rice cakes. #
  • Instant Noodles - an obvious food to list but make a pretty filling lunch and are dirt cheap!
  • Dried Fruit - Raisins, Apricots, Cranberries, etc. make a great snack or to go as part of breakfast.
General Tips:-

  • Lots of vegetables nearing the end of their fridge life? Make a hearty vegetable soup by simply boiling the veg in stock, you could even add any left over chicken or other meat you fancy. Easy to make and can be frozen to eat at a later date.
  • Just because it's from the value range at your supermarket, doesn't mean it isn't good quality.
  • Make sure you write a shopping list before you go, and more importantly, stick to it! It's very easy to spend over your budget on things that are on offer or that you're tempted by when you're walking around.
  • Don't go shopping on an empty stomach, you'll simply buy more, and possibly quick snack foods (like chocolate or crisps) that you wouldn't normally buy, just because you are hungry.
  • Make batches of food (eg. Curry/Chilli) that you can freeze and defrost the morning you want to eat it - an easy meal if you have late lectures.
  • The reduced section of a supermarket is a fab way to pick up ready meals cheaply, and freeze ready to eat another day. Just make sure you can freeze them before you buy!

Review | Anker Astro Mini External USB Charger

Anker Astro Mini External USB Charger

This little beauty is new to my handbag but something that I feel deserves a whole blog post of its own cause it's just that great. Hold onto your hats, people.

Have you ever gone on a trip out and run out of battery half way through the day? Are you a keen iPhone photographer and are always draining your battery taking photos? Or are you just a tweetaholic who cant make a full charge last all day? Of course you are, well here is the answer to your problems. A very simple device but one which is well worth buying.

Price
As I bought this from Amazon, I ended up getting a great deal as the RRP is £39.99 and I only paid £13.99, with free delivery! I have no idea how long this offer will last for so I suggest if you consider buying it after reading this post then dive in quick.

Power
I have an iPhone 5 so can only speak on how it performs with this model of phone, but I managed to gain a full charge, 0% to 100%, from this little bad boy but it can cope with 2 to 3 half/part charges before it dies. To charge the charger itself, you simply plug the charging lead provided into the powerpack and then into a USB charger (such as the plug of an iPhone charger) and it charges on its own. It only takes a few hours to fully charge which is great but I tend to charge it overnight ready to go straight back into my handbag.

Size
As you can see from the photo above, it is only just bigger than the average lipstick which is pretty impressive as it can easily be slid into a handbag and not take up much room. It comes with its own little mesh bag to keep it in and this is big enough to fit an iPhone lead in too. Although the iPhone cable was not provided, I'm not too bothered as I can order a cheap one online somewhere just to keep in my bag.

Overall I am so so impressed with this little charger, it is a permanent item in my handbag and has already proved invaluable. I can only imagine that when I'm back at university and spending lots of time on campus that this will come in very handy. It's well worth the money, especially with the discounted price, and I'm going to get lots of use out of it.

15 Things I Wish I'd Known At 15

Today I was inspired by Polly, who had visited the Heartbreak hotel at Southbank in London while the 'festival of love' is going on. She shared on twitter some images from the exhibit titled "Things I wish I'd Known At 15" and I found myself interested in the wide range of statements made on a range of topics so I thought I'd compile my own list of things I wish I'd known at 15.
  1. Not all friends will stick around but once you’ve found the right ones, they’ll last a lifetime.
  2. Revision isn’t all about reading books and copying up notes, past papers are the key to success.
  3. You’ll think you’ve found the love of your life but sometimes you couldn’t be more wrong.
  4. Take risks. You’ll never know unless you try.
  5. Take your time. You don’t need to rush into growing up and entering the adult world. When it’s your time you’ll regret the times you forgot to be a child.
  6. Your thoughts will destroy you if you let them.
  7. You won’t always be a size 8, and that’s okay.
  8. Don’t be so trusting, but also don’t stop trusting.
  9. Listen more. Everyone has a story to tell.
  10. Stop trying to please everyone, you can’t make everyone happy even if you want to.
  11. Vodka isn’t the answer to your problems, it just leads to more regrets.
  12. Don’t stop doing what you love. Be passionate and screw anyone who doesn’t accept that.
  13. You’ll never see what others see when they look at you. Just because you don’t see it, that doesn’t mean it’s not true.
  14. Trust your instinct, it’s there for a reason.
  15. You’ll reach your goals. The journey will have hiccups and will probably take longer than expected but trust that you’ll get there if you keep trying.

I might only be 19 years old, with most of my life still to live but I've learnt so much in the past 5 years in particular that I feel they are still worth sharing. It'll be good to look back on this in perhaps another 5 years and see yet again how my outlook on the world has changed. We can choose to never stop learning and that's exactly what I intend to do.

Summer Reads | You Had Me At Hello

Before I completed my GCSE's I was a major bookworm, always switching time outside to stay in, read and drink tea. I was a complete bookworm. My studies took over but I still loved, and still do love reading so I thought I'd share with you a book a finished just a few days ago. I bought it months ago but it took me until the other week to start reading.

The Storyline //

Mhairi McFarlane explores the concept of 'The One Who Got Away' and what happens if they come back into your life unexpectedly, through humour and romance.

"Rachel and Ben. Ben and Rachel. It was them against the world. Until it all fell apart. It’s been a decade since they last spoke, but when Rachel bumps into Ben one rainy day, the years melt away.
They’d been partners in crime and the best of friends. But life has moved on: Ben is married. Rachel is not. Yet in that split second, Rachel feels the old friendship return. And along with it, the broken heart she’s never been able to mend." (the blurb)
My Thoughts //
I found myself instantly relating to everyday situations that Rachel finds herself in as she travels through life at university and beyond, whether it be meeting people for the first time, dealing with boss's/colleague's are far from professional and friends who aren't what they seem. I found myself laughing at the awkward and embarrassing situations that we've all found ourselves in and crying when she is nursing a broken heart, they're experiences that we have all been through so I found it easy to connect with how the character was feeling and experience things with her, especially as it is written in the first person.
The chapters are fairly short which means it's a book which is easy to pick up and put down and not lose your place, and easy to read for hours, or short bursts, however you prefer. The book is mainly set in the present but sometimes switches back to the past when extra insight is needed to explain why she is feeling the way she does or to highlight an event which she remembers in that moment. I like that, it gives depth to her character and makes her even more believable and easy to relate to.
I was hooked on this book by the end and I could easier have read a little more into what happens next, (SO difficult not to spoil the end!) and for anyone who loves a good rom-com, I thoroughly recommend this book as an easy read which is enjoyable from beginning to end.

// CAKE POPS //

Yes, I've jumped onto the 'cake pop' badwagon and as a first attempt I just went as simple as possible to avoid a complete disaster! I'm actually quite happy with how they turned out and can't wait to make them again and mix up the toppings.

for 30 (ish) cake pops, you will need //
  • 110g self raisng flour
  • 110g caster sugar
  • 110g unsalted butter
  • 2 eggs
  • a few drops of vanilla extract
for the topping //
For this I used melted chocolate and icing (made from icing sugar and water mixed together). It's a little trial and error in getting the consistency right so just bare with it and experiment! I then just sprinkled on some 'raspberry fudge balls' and 'sugar sprinkles' which I bought from Lakeland. But you can use whatever you like, be creative!

method //

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°c/Gas Mark 4 and lightly grease the moulds.
  2. Place the butter and caster sugar in a large bowl and beat (with an electric mixer if preferred) until soft and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs.
  3. Sift in the flour and then using a metal spoon, fold in gently.
  4. Spoon the mixture into the moulds (one teaspoon per round) and bake in the pre-heated oven for 18-22 minutes. To check if they are done, poke in a skewer - if it comes out clean, then they are ready. Transfer to a wire rack and let them cool.
  5. Make your toppings (ie, mix icing/melt chocolate, etc) and once the cakes have cooled, dip the end of each stick into the icing/chocolate and poke into the bottom of the cake until you reach half way. Stand in polystyrene (or I used floral foam) and place in the fridge for 10-15 minutes for it to harden.
  6. Remove from the fridge and cover with icing/sprinkles/topping of your choice. Place back in the fridge until ready to eat!

// CRAB PASTA //

I love cooking and baking, but when it comes to food, I've always been someone that wants to try new things but is a little scared of wasting it if it doesn't take my fancy. But, I'm branching out and this summer I intend on finding lots more foods that I like and improving my palette. (Also an excuse to drag along my boyfriend to restaurants to try things too!) My Grandma also loves cooking and one of the recipes we love to cook together, I actually wrote a blog post about, it was a delicious Chicken, Chorizo and Lemon Linguine and I make this at uni for myself too, so quick, relatively cheap and tastes great.

I like fish but again, have never really branched out from your regular cod/haddock/tuna/salmon and when my grandma said she'd bought some crab we quickly scoured her recipe books and this is what we came up with. Big apologies for the iPhone/Instagram snap but I had no intention of blogging this recipe until I was scrolling through my instagram feed (anyone else do this?) and remembered how delicious it was and thought to share it with you.

for two people, you will need //

  • 100-150g Linguine/Spaghetti (depending on how big you want your portions)
  • 1 garlic clove
  • Spring onions (we used about 10)
  • Cherry tomatoes (we used around 15)
  • 100g dressed white crab
  • Chilli flakes (to taste)
  • Lemon juice (about a tablespoon)
  • Tomato puree - to thicken and help coat the pasta
  • Fresh parsley - as an optional garnish
method //
  1. Put the water for the pasta on to boil, then chop the tomatoes/spring onions and crush the garlic, and then fry in a little oil until soft.
  2. Once the pasta is cooked to your liking, drain and then add the tomatoes/spring onions/garlic mixture, the chilli flakes, lemon juice and the crab and stir together. If the 'sauce' isn't quite coating all the pasta then add some tomato puree (or tomato ketchup if you have to puree).
  3. Heat through for about 2 minutes and then serve with a garnish of fresh parsley
per portion, it works out at around 266 calories so not bad considering you're using pasta! It's a light pasta dish which would be perfect as a big lunch or light dinner and as you can see, is so quick and easy to make.

lessons learnt in my fresher year.

As I write this I'm currently donning fluffy socks, a glass of Archers and lemonade and watching the intense Wimbledon final. Relaxing Sundays are the one.

This year has been a huge whirlwind and so much has changed in my life, the majority for the better. Your fresher year at university is most definitely a learning curve, you'll make lots of mistakes; not only academically but also with your life choices, so here is my reflection on what I've learnt throughout the year.

You'll do a stupid amount of stupid things when you're drunk //
If you drink, or even if you don't, you are guaranteed to make rushed or peer influenced decisions which you will live to regret. Fact. Whether it's having that extra sambuca shot, kissing that person or leaving your essay to the last minute, it's gonna happen. But don't let it get to you, you're young and at university, if that's not an excuse for your silly mistakes then what is?! It's a learning curve, embrace it. But do  remember that although you may have erased it from your memory, others may have not...

Although you'll deny it at first, the library will become your "favourite" place //
It seems daunting at first, especially if you miss the library induction due to a hangover, like someone I know *hides face in shame*, but the library really is an invaluable resource. I know, who'd have thought it?!?! You'll need it to find the endless list of books you need for essays or presentations and you'll spend hours in there wishing you hadn't left your essay or revision to the last minute. My advice would be: take snacks, a friend and your headphones. They're your best weapons to surviving it.

You will miss home more than you expect //
Before leaving, I knew I would miss home, but I thought I'd be too busy to really think about it, which is true to an extent. When you're out partying, meeting new people and attending lectures, you'll rarely have time to think about what you're missing. But it is when you feel down, or are low on money or have had back a result you aren't pleased with, that you'll really start to miss your home comforts and family life. Sometimes the only thing that will make thins better is a mummy cuddle.

You can't please everyone //
Although I tried super hard in first year to get along with everyone I came across, in reality, it just doesn't happen. But instead of moping around and wondering why, just accept that it's the real world. You can't be great friends with everyone you meet, they may not like you, you might not like them. Just forget it and concentrate on the people who you are friends with, cause they're the only ones that matter.

Lecturers will give you better marks if they like you //
It's not fair to anyone, but it undoubtedly happens. It's hard not to see it when, for example, this year I completed 4 essays as part of my four modules and in them I received two 2:1's and two 3rds. Coincidently, the thirds came from the lecturers who disagree with everything I say in seminars. Of course their opinion is valid, but so is mine and I feel it is extremely harsh to mark a student down simply because you do not agree with the points they made. As long as they have accurately backed them up with evidence, they should get credit. But of course this is not the case, it's not fair, but it's life.

You will return home with half the kitchen stuff you came with //
I spent hundreds of pounds buying ample kitchen equipment and crockery only to have to re-buy lots for second year. Partly due to my clumsiness but also due to other people thinking it's okay to claim it for their own. If you live in halls for first year, in shared flats, you will definitely experience this. Not only with equipment but with food, certain people have no morals and therefore if they see, it they'll nab it. Not a lot you can do because you don't want to go round confronting people (even if you know exactly who the culprit is...) because it just creates unwanted tension which will make you uncomfortable for the rest of the year.

You'll meet people you never thought you would //
There are thousands of students at university (duh...) so you'll meet and possibly become friends with people you never thought you would, which will in turn open up your ideas about the world and the people in it. It's a wonderful thing because you can learn so much in so little time, not just academically but about the world we live in.

Make the most of societies and clubs //
This year I failed to join any clubs or societies and made the excuse of  "I just don't have time" when really, I was just lazy. It's a great way to meet new people and learn new skills, university is a time to develop yourself as a person as well as becoming more qualified in your field of choice. Make the most of your time there and learn as much as you can!

june recap.

Bit of a switch up from the traditional 'monthly favourites' post, I fancied recapping not only my most loved things from June but add in a few lifestyle updates which would be nice to look back on in a few months time. It's tough now that I've finished university to get out and do things that don't cost a bomb but are still fun, but it should be easier now I've moved back home for the summer cause I get lots of time with people.

FAVOURITES

Yankee Candle in 'Beach Flowers':-
This was bought for my birthday by my lovely mum who wanted a colour of candle that would match my room but also smell lovely and this is just it! I'm constantly burning it, but it's hardly burnt down already so I'm super impressed. Did I mention it smells incredible?!

MAC 'Mulch' eyeshadow:-
I love love love this eyeshadow because it's great worn alone or added to a lighter matte or shimmer to create a subtle smoke and dimension to the shadow. Perfecto.

Jewellery:-
I used to be obsessed with buying jewellery a few years ago, every time I went into town I'd always go into Accesorize and pick up a new piece to add to my collection. When I moved to university, I threw out most of it cause it was getting old and worn, so I hardly wore it. Jewellery then took a back seat for a while, until I went into Topshop the other day and picked up a few pieces which are subtle but lovely all the same. They just bring an outfit together.

River Island Gladiator style sandals:-
I saw Zoella mention these in a video and fell in love instantly. I've never really been a shoe person, I'd always rather have a few pairs that suit all occasions but I adore these and have literally worn them every single day since I got them. They go with everything and suit all weather, rain or shine.

Tove Lo - Stay High:-
Another song for you to feast your ears on this month and this one is equally as incredible as last months favourite. I am constantly listening to this whatever mood I'm in and the video is so powerful. The lyrics are fairly serious but the beat behind it lifts this song up so it's not so down and depressing.

LIFE

So this month I packed up 9 months worth of junk ready to move back into my parents house for the summer. It's so strange not being self sufficient and just looking after myself. I miss cooking for one person, getting up when I'm ready and not fighting for the shower in the morning! But at the same time, I really do enjoy being home. I'm a family girl at heart, even though sometimes my independence gets in the way and I have to take time out. But equally I'm so so lucky to be back at home and have my family around me, and then when I need a little 'me' time there's plenty of countryside to wander or places to visit. I'm really trying to focus on spending time with people this summer because last summer was quite a lonely time for me and I regret not embracing life and just going with my gut. I'm planning so many trips out and meeting up with people and I'm really lucking forward to it, and yes, I may not have the budget to do everything, but I feel like right now I'm not tied down by a mortgage or children, etc so I should just go out and enjoy being young and being able to embrace all these wonderful opportunities. (Not that being tied down by those things is a bad thing, at 19 or any other age, but for me right now I'm focusing on my career and enjoying being young.)

Another big thing that happened this month was that I finally went swimming for the first time in around 7/8 years. It may not seem like a big thing to most people, but I've always had anxiety surrounding swimming but I finally stepped into the pool and swam a few lengths without a panic attack or drowning. Which to me, is such a big step, and one of which I am so proud of. Swimming is such a wonderful form of exercise so I hope to keep going and getting fitter each time. It's such an exciting prospect.

I also went on a school trip with 60 foundation stage children from the school I woke seasonally at, to a butterfly farm in Stratford-upon-Avon, to link in with the topic they are currently studying. It was such a wonderful day consisting of stifling humidity (yay for my makeup sinking into my skin, boo), well behaved children, picnic lunches, playground time and sleepy coach rides home. It really was a lovely day and just confirmed to me even more than I'm in the right career to suit me and I can't wait to have my own class to et to know and nurture in one of the most important stages of their lives. One of the teachers there also told my mum that I was a natural with the children which makes me super happy, but also question whether foundation stage might be the right age fr me to teach. Who knows!

may favourites

This month has been an eventful one filled with birthday celebrations for my 19th, shopping and discovery of new tv shows due to having so much spare time recently so this months favourites are a bit of a mixture of beauty and lifestyle.

MAC 'Crosswires' lipstick:
This was a bit of an impulse purchase after I saw someone post a photo of it on instagram, it looked beautiful so I ran down to my nearest MAC and picked it up. I haven't been let down! It's so creamy and is easily worn with my everyday makeup or with vampy, smoky eyes on a night out or evening. It's so versatile and I've worn it almost every day this month!

MAC 'All That Glitters' eyeshadow:
A peach shimmer which brightens up tired eyes and fits with the current SS14 trends. Blends out like a dream and is great worn alone or with some subtle contour.

Model's Own 'Hedonist':
A vibrant and fluorescent fuchsia which is the perfect summer bright!

L'Oreal 'Nouvelle Vague':
A off-white violet shade which is a wonderful pastel. Looks great when pale, but even better with a tan!

Mr. Probz - Waves (Robin Schulz radiot edit):
I haven't stopped listening to this song since I first heard it played on the radio! It's wonderfully chilledd but still great for a sing song, whenever I hear it, I'm automatically cheered up!

Orange Is The New Black:
If you haven't yet watched the first series of this on Netflix then where have you been?! It's ah-ma-zing! The storyline is about a woman who in her past smuggled drugs for a former girlfriend, and although now she has moved on an intends to marry her male partner, she is sent to a women's prison where she initially doesn't fit in due to her privileged background. I'll say no more, just go and watch, you won't regret it!

Marc Jacobs 'Daisy' perfume:
As my Marc Jacobs 'Honey' perfume ran out, and it was nearing my birthday, this scent was top of my birthday wish list! Described as "sophisticated floral with vintage edge of violet" and with notes of

easter/end of year treats

(L) 'All That Glitters' (R) 'Mystery'

My palette is slowly filling up!

So I was lucky enough to get money for easter so instead of spending it on boring things like food or cleaning products (who needs those anyway right?) I decided to treat myself for easter and because I have officially finished my first year of university! I handed in my last essay on Monday and it was such a relief. This year has flown by, but I'm lucky enough to still be living in my uni city this term, just to enjoy being independent and spending time with my bestest chums!

Of course my first stop was MAC, I simply cannot go into High Cross shopping centre without picking something up in there. I'm slowly but surely filling up my 15 pan palette so picked up two more shades 'All That Glitters' and 'Mystery' which fit with my neutral theme. I was desperate for another lipstick and after seeing someone instagram a photo of 'Crosswires' I kinda wanted it to be mine right away. It's a new formula compared to my other MAC lipsticks as it's a Cremesheen but still doesn't disappoint on pigmentation or moisturisation. Finally a mascara, something I'd never thought to go to MAC for until I received a tester of the 'Zoom Fast Black Lash' through with an online order and within one use I was sold. It wings out my lashes and gives them incredible length and volume. I like that it has a bristle brush which is tapered meaning that each lash is coated evenly with a strong black colour.

Next was Topshop in search of something to wear tonight for our first night out back at uni, as soon as I walked through the door I spotted the white crop top with lace flower detailing and knew it was coming home with me. It's a fail safe which can be worn with shorts, jeans or patterned trousers and look great. I can tell I'll be wearing this non-stop in the summer.

Then the Body Shop where I picked up the Camomile Silky Cleansing Oil, a Kate from gh0stparties influenced purchase, am yet to try this, but promises great things! It smells wonderful and has a pump which I love for this sort of cleanser, it means you don't waste a single drop!

And finally Primark, I just picked up a back up blouse for either tonight or another night, but could also be worn in the day time. It's a muted-fluroescent peach and just compliments my skin tone and hair colour well, I love my blouses and for £8 it was a bargain! Then a pair of simple black earrings to wear tonight or whenever, again for a pound, you can't go wrong.
